Default rear brake parts quality and contact area!

Has anyone compared the more expensive brake shoes and pads? Before we moved, I redid the brakes on the 94 because I expected heavy towing. I replaced everything except the drums because the cheap drums that I got had just a little very little meat on them, actually about the same as my old ones that had been turned. I now have Lost emergency brake because cable at wheel, (Tefflon cracked inside and locked up it up), so I was redoing that. Decided to re do brakes agin because of heat check on surface, (Yes I was overloaded on a 600 mile trip). Now only the more expensive drum, with better metal thickness is sold, the cheap ones are gone. Now Im wondering if the more expensice shoes are better, the cheap ones seem to have thin friction surface. Another thing I see is the shoes are wearing on the first few inches of surface on each side and not in the center. Ive never seen this before, any one out there paid attention to shoe wear. I first thought warped drum caused it but that doesnt make sense. Any body seen this before?

Semi-Metallic are fine but I went with Ceramic..Happy with my choice.
