Aftermarket Stereo/Head Unit Help, What works, pics?
ive got a 91 2 wheel with the v6 and when i got it it had another factory stereo in, nothing fancy but tape and radio, but i went right to walmart and picked up the adapter and put in a single din cd deck with aux, the guy before me install 2 sets on boston acoustic compnents 6" woofers in the doors, and 4" woofer in the side panels, the tweeters were on the dash 2 towards the outside of the truck and 2 in the middle. the 2 outside tweeters are bad but it still sounds fine. the only down side was the installation. the door appeared to be cut with tin snips and there where ony 2 screws holding the woofers in, i made adapter plates and put some deadener in, and he cut the end off of the factory harness for the speakers and used wire nuts, so i just ran a wire from batt+ and put in an inline fuse and found a switched 12v where the original stereo was and wired it up, over all after i cleaned it up and fixed everything it sounds great. I too am an audiophile only being 18 but love clean and clear music and this setup is great, but still wanna add a subwoofer behind the seat for that extra little kick.
Ya Walmart is a great place to get the basics. I had a $300 (6-8 years ago) JVC tilt face until I got from Best Buy, it died on me this fall.
Then I got a $180 Sony unit from Walmart. Bluetooth usb aux input. Remote, with the Bluetooth you can stream music from your phone and control it with your remote.

Here is the best picture I got of the old unit (JVC KD-LH300), along with my XM satalite radio receiver.

As for speakers I bought 6x9's for the rear to replace the 5x7's. For the fronts 6.5 to replace the 5.5's?. Simple ones from Walmart are way better then the old stockers.

You can't go bigger than 5x7 in a single cab. They install in the molding on the side where the seat belts go. There's not enough room for a larger speaker. At least that's the case in my '90, though I suppose you could always extend the speaker wire and mount them elsewhere.
Thanks guys. I wanted to keep this a budget project but things like USB and bluetooth are tempting, just a bit more expensive.
Thinking about adding a CB for kicks, where's a good place to put it? The only place I can think of is the center console box but theres not a whole lot of room in there to start.
I have an ext cab btw

Also regarding the install, are there any hidden screws or anything I should know about, I thought I found a little walk through but can't find it, I'm assuming you just have to remove the dash cover(wood grain) to get to the head unit right?
Remove the knee bolster under the steering wheel, should have 2 screws in that on the bottom. Then 8 Torx screws in the woodgrain and 2 phillips head on each side of the steering wheel. Then 2 10mm bolts for the radio.

The only really hidden ones are the two underneath once you remove that first panel. After that it's really straight forward and obvious. The dash trim does take some pulling to get out though. I'd also suggest painting it while it's out. Krylon fusion works awesome on plastic and it goes a long way to break up the interior without much effort.
I painted mine white and it looks awesome imo. Doesn't seem so dark at night and it's going to look great when I get around to converting the gauges to white with LEDs. This pic doesn't do it justice, but oh well.
That white dash looks amazing, I was actually considering painting mine black, I'm assuming you prepped it, sanded the fake wood grain off?
I like the ceiling mount idea, running the cables down turns me off though, I'm pretty inexperienced and lazy, I understand it needs a base to mount on, why a ping pong paddle?
I got a pretty good deal on a headunit, it doesn't have usb or anything fancy but it was free, has aux in on the back but through an adapter that I need to get. I found a dash kit (Metra 99-6000) with a cd pocket, I'll run the aux cable out through that(and hide it in there), also thinking about having a hidden 12v usb charger tapped into the radio's key on and running an ipod charger cable out too (cig adapters bug me)
The radio outputs 4x60w, I might be upgrading the speakers sooner than I thought
