Exclamation stuck in gear

91 dakota LA 318 5.2L 4x4 ext cab.

I was going to tow my truck to a buddies house to replace my trans lines. They leak as quick as its poured. With no trans fluid I drove it 5 ft onto a tow dolley. I than come to find out I cant get my transfer case into neutral to tow it. I have disconnected the driveshaft to tow it tomorrow. At first it would let me shift it into the neutral position but it would not engage. Now its stuck in 4L. Any ideas?

I would start by making sure all your linkage is adjusted properly for the transmission and the transfer case. And make sure the linkage isn't binding. If the linkage appears rusty or corroded soak it down with some good penetration oil.

dont go by where the pointer is in the PRNDL indicator; since the 60s they have been the same order; 1 click from P is reverse then neutarl then Drive. it is common for the indicator to not work, or be "off".
