94 dakota stalls out when hot outside
have a 94 dodge dakota sport short box 318 5 speed now i love my truck but i am going nuts -- just fixed problem with truck just dying while driving now its stalling out as soon as i get off freeway the tackometer pegs out at 6 grand and it stumbles can keep it running but it bogs the entire time almost like starving for fuel, shut it off wait about 10 minutes starts back up and is fine for awhile now the bad part is it only does this on semi hot days drive at night and its fine -- what could be heating up during day time that would make it stall out anyone with idea please help
Dobaroy has a good point but i would think it would be the intake air temp sensor and not just the coolant temp sensor. If its hot out and the IAT sensor is going bad then it could read higher than what the actual air temp is and causing the fuel air ratio to be off or even timing. The IAT sensor has a part in controlling air fuel ratio and timing. Correct me if im wrong but i believe the IAT sensor is a variable resistor (temp goes up and resistance goes down, temp goes down and resistance goes up). Aldo is there any codes? You also said the tach pegs at 6000 rpm. Is the motor actually turning 6000 rpms? Im pretty sure the cam sensor is what determines the rpm and it to has a part in adjusting the A/F ratio and the timing.
not sure what to think now, actually got worse or better depends on how i look at it.Now it will start up but when i put it in gear start to go it does the same thing tach goes to max and it spits and sputters - before i could actuaaly drive before it did this now i am stuck won't move without acting up- wondering if its fuel pump not puyying out or if its something else any ideas will really help- thanks for all the input thus far do appreciate everything
I would start by testing the sensors. You should be able to find the test procedures in the FAQS section under the service manuals. Start there to rule out any sensor problems. To me it sounds electrical.
I have the same problem, And I've replaced nearly every sensor, alternator, batter, plugs, wires, dist. and cap, map sensor, o2 sensor, ect. ect. It looks like the previous owner checked the wires to the pcm also. I haven't checked the pump but I can smell gas when I try to start it in between stalls. I hope someone answers this for us.
