Help 95 Dodge Dakota V8 surging while driving
Hey I have a 95 dodge Dakota v8 that if you are driving down the road and hold the throttle still it acts like it surges. Replaced the TPS sensor and the fuel module assembly with no change. If you give it more throttle it goes right on down the road. Looked for any vacuum leaks and replaced a lot of the hoses but no luck yet. Anyone got any ideas? The engine has about 60,000 on it and the truck has almost 300,000 on it. The trans has been rebuilt and shifts out great. It idles great and everything else on the truck works wonderful but the surging is about to drive me nuts.
I know my 95 318 did that once. It also at times during that drive acted like it wasn't getting enough fuel. My gas gauge was under a quarter tank so i didn't think it was a low fuel problem. U took it to the store and put gas in it and it drove fine. Then tonight i made a quick run up the road and my gas light came on. Right as i was fixing to pull into my driveway it started spitting and sputtering so i think my gauge may be a little off. When the light comes on it means im out of gas not just low lol. Not sure if that helps with your problem any but thought id let you know. Also may want to try some fuel injector cleaner and see if that helps. Ive used the Lucas cleaner and for me it worked great.
Well if you checked the fuel pressure then that means you have the right fuel pressure to the injectors but does not mean that the fuel injectors are flowing like the are supposed to. You can check the ohms( resistance) at the injectors to make sure one of them isnt bad. You may have to search around. I have seen a post not to long ago where someone was doing this. Or check the FAQS section under service manuals. Also make sure they are getting the correct voltage from the computer. If voltage isn't correct you could have a bad connection at the pcm or the injector itself. The voltage drop could also be in the wiring harness but its more common for a connection to be the cause. If the voltage is good then you have to make sure that all the injectors are all flowing properly. If i remember correctly the other guy i was talking about was getting a code for a miss on the cylinder the injector was bad on. Make sure you check your codes even if the light isn't on. If no codes are found and voltage is correct and the resistance is correct then you may have to take it to a shop to have a flow test done on the injectors unless someone else knows how to perform one without the proper setup to do it. If i remember correctly the other guy ended up changing his pcm to fix the problem. But before you do that if the injectors test out good make sure to check the fire from the entire ignition system. Remember in order for the cylinder to produce power it has to have fuel, adequate fire, oxygen, and compression. Hope this helps a little and keep us posted on any progress or anymore symptoms.
Try taking your battery cables completely off and tap them together then leave them off for a hour or so I tried replacing my fuel pump tps and checked everything I could and that worked after all of that... Might not be the same problem but mine was doing the same thing
