93 dakota engine tranny swap
ok so i have a 93 dakota sport with the 3.9 V-6 i have been riding in this truck since i was in a car seat no joke and i got it from my dad about 3 years ago since ive had it the over drive in the transmission dosnt work and ive decicded to just go ahead pull the engine n trans my question is should i convert it to a manuel trans or leave it automactic if i do convert it to a manuel id like to find a six speed not a five speed what kind of car could i get that out of ? and the enigine id like to have the 5.9 but i will settle for the 5.2 either way its not going to b fuel injected afterwards im going to convert it to a carb which one should i try and go for and which one will b easier for the performance?
If OD is your only problem I say try to fix it first. Usually it is a bad speed sensor or wiring, or a bad transmission solenoid.
If you dead set on a engine swap the best for power is a 5.9 V8. Fuel injection will give you way more power and MPG then a carbureted setup.
If you get a 5.9 from a 93-95 all you need for the swap is the complete engine/transmission including all electronics (sensors and injectors and PCM). Your stock wiring will work just add in 2 more injector wires. Very simple, several V6-V8 swaps in the FAQ2.
As far as a 6 speed the only option may be something crazy like a Viper transmission or something else special/expensive which will need special adapters ect.
5 speeds are just fine for our engines, just remember it is a truck engine not a race engine.

I just finished an auto to manual swap in my 93... I have more $ in it than expected especially considering what I had layin around which was a great head start to the project. and don't necessarily listen to anyone that discounts the 318 (5.2) and says to go directly to the 360. there is nothing at all wrong with a good 318. and like the last post-er likes his 360s I prefer 318s.
