Default 318 block questions

ok.. i just got a 318 for pretty much free, i have two problems, i need a timing chain cover and the block has a small crack, the timing chain cover won't be a problem, the question is, how fixable is a cracked block? the crack is only 2 inches long but it was too dark to take photos, i'll post photos of the crack once i get the valves and other parts off the engine, but if i MIG weld the crack, will it hold, that's my only question really on here tonight, if anyone knows, it would be greatly apreciated, thank you for any responses and i hope everyone had a safe weekend

What truck did the engine come from?
Where is the crack exactly?
I would suggest taking it to an automotive machine shop and get their opinion on the crack.
