Timing issue again
The spark controller does not apply to your truck with it being a 92. The spark timing control computer was used in 87 in combination with a carburetor. Yours being a 92, the pcm also controls spark timing which would be located on the passenger side fender under the hood.
Just went through similar problem.
My truck may be slightly different it is a 95 Dakota. First note the distribute does two things, it synchronizes the fuel injection with the camshaft and aligns transfer of spark down the correct plug wire.
The number 1 plug wire needs to be on the distrib cap where indicated by the number 1 on the cap itself.
Setting the motor to Top Dead Center (TDC) of the number one piston is the first step. When you have this done look down the hole where the distributor plugs into. The notch in the center of the gear that drives, off the camshaft and spins the oil pump should be aligned length wise with say the crankshaft. Following? If it is not you need to reach down the hole with a coat hanger wire and pick up the gear, and rotate into alignment. The gear should rotate while lifting so some guessing of which tooth makes it align. In the end rotate the motor two revolutions back to TDC #1 compression stroke and verify.
When you drop in the distributor there are two choices 180º out or you get it in right. Turn the distributor with the rotor on, such that the plastic camshaft sensor plate alignment mark is in line with the rotor tip.
Bolt down the distributor. This is as close as you can get with out the super obgyn tool. It makes it close enough.
Hope it helps
