I will move this to the 1st generation Dakota sub-forum.

A LSD is not a locker. A LSD probably gives 25/75 or less power to the wheels and the wheel with less traction will get most of the power.
Only a locker will give you 50/50 split to the wheels.

So first you may want to decide what you want. LSD are great on the street and will give a tad bit more traction offroad vs open diffs. Also for ice and icy snow LSD may be best choice. Like what most people call Posi or the factory Mopar versions.

For the best traction a locker is best. For great street performance get a selectable locker. Like ARB air lockers, or electronic lockers.
For a good price with easy installation with a careful driving on road an automatic locker is best. Like Powertrax No-Slip and Lock-Right.

The powertrax no slip automatic locker will be the easiest to install and no gear setup is needed and is a very strong and reliable locker with a very good price. For the LSD id look at going with the mopar performance LSD. It to is a good reliable product with a good price. There are better lsd and lockers but the powertrax and mp lsd are the best bang for the buck. If your wealthy an money is not a issue then you can get whatever you like.

All i can find online for powertrax diff's is just 27 spline for open diff axles, do they not have a specific gear rating? or does the stock gearing stay in when you install one?

The stock gears stay in. You just simply replace the spider gears you don't have to touch the ring and pinion at all!! Easy 1-2 hour job with simple tools.

Here is a very simple how to on it.

Depending on what rear end you got. I'm assuming a Chry 8.25 (oval diff cover) if so then it can handle the 5.9. If you got the Chry 7.25 (octagon shaped cover) then you may want to upgrade the entire axle.

Holy shift the powertrax 1220 LR for the 9.25 sure does have a big price swing. I checked 6 months ago and they were averaging around $300. Now they're up to $400.
