Default Radio Question

What i know so far is that any stock radio head unit that fits the square in the dash will generally work so long as its a chrysler head unit. What year did they change the shape of it? (Currently using 01" Ram Unit) Thinking about upping my sound system a little bit since i have extra speakers that are brand new that im not using and wanting to add a small sub. Buddy of mine has a sub wired through his factory unit in his jeep liberty, curious if those new head units had plugs for that? and if the shape would still fit the square of my 93". Anyone know much about this?

For sound quality its best to use a aftermarket stereo. Just buy the installation kit and wire harness. Install is very easy on these trucks and with my ext cab the 10 inch sub with a small amp hits really hard.

Yes just get aftermarket units, factory units suck.

Suprisingly enough, every after market unit I have listened to compared to my 01' Ram unit have sounded pretty much the same. Of course I won't be able to hear perfect quality with the wind-noise in cab that our trucks have. Asking about sizes and whatnot since I have access to a few newer jeeps with radios. 01' - 06 is what I can get into and pick up a radio I know works perfectly fine for a good bit less than an aftermarket unit.

I thought they changed connectors for the radio in 2000. Connecters for our truck should match radio between 1984 and 2000.

from what i've seen in the jy the radio connectors stayed the same from 1987 all the way up to 2004 even the durangos had the same connector. just the wire colors changed. after someone decided the factory radio harness in my 93 was too good to pass up i went to the jy(which only had 03-04 durangos) grab the factory harness and spliced it into mine. the radios changed in 97 and those won't fit our square dashes without modification(i tried already). imo if you want to keep a factory radio in your truck to deter thieves then go ith one out of an older fwd dodge/mopar. they had the infinity sound system and have way better quality then the ones that came in our trucks.

Did those also have the separate amplifier like the Infinity system that came in Dakotas? If they did, will they work without it? Do they have a built-in amp?

iirc the speakers had the amp built into them but were known to fail. with a little soldering they would work like new. i never messed with the speaker part but because someone decided my truck was to different i ran a stock type radio a coule years. i gambled with ones i found at swap meets ehich threw me off because they sounded amazing for a stock radio.

my daily is now a 98 intrigue and even that sound system (no amp or subs) hits better than my friends 08 impala(which has a factory sub and amp).
