Oh my god, what the hec??????????????????????????
The subject line says it all.
FYI - '95 Dakota, V6, automatic, fuel injected, 86M orig miles.
I had bad, erratic, rough idle, stalling, shifting issues, multiple codes, etc........ for the last few weeks.
This is what I did a year ago at 85M miles when I bought it from my next door neighbor:
new K&N air filter
new plugs
new wires
new cap
new rotor
all premium grade items from Autozone
This is what I did at 86M miles a year later when the rough idle, stalling issues surfaced:
* new TPS
* new IAC - FOUR times
* new PCV
* new EGR
* new Accel Coil
* new Vehicle Speed Sensor
* pulled battery cable
* deox'd ALL ground connections
* deox'd all PCM connections
* deox'd every connector under the hood
* checked all vacuum lines
* checked all wiring
* cleaned the intake / throttle body with TWO cans of Gumout
* STP fuel injector treatment X 3
* HOURS OF WATCHING MY ACTRON CP9190 TELL ME WHAT WAS GOING ON REALTIME
* hours behind this computer on this awesome forum looking for answers
THINGS I WAS ABOUT TO DO SINCE NOTHING ABOVE WORKED:
* new PCM
* new TCC
* new O2 sensor
* bring it into my mechanic as a last resort
* consider the '95 had seen better days, put it to rest and buy a newer truck
Here is where the OMG WTF UFB comment comes in:
Before I spent well over $1000 for a new PCM or for my mechanic to start checking things out, I tried one more thing that I recall from my 1964 Corvair ownership teenage days - a basic cap and rotor.
I had purchased a premium "GOLD" expensive cap and rotor from Autozone about a year ago.
Since then only 1000 miles were put on the truck.
That was the VERY LAST ITEM I would have thought was defective and causing the bizzare behavior.
Tonight I put in a MOPAR original cap and rotor.
Could not believe the amount of oxidation and carbonation I saw inside the cap.
WHOLLY BUCKWHEAT it was horrendous!!!
No clue why - vehicle was stored indoors and routinely started and run.
WITH THE NEW CAP AND ROTOR SHE NOW PURRS LIKE A KITTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dang it - I spent $500+ when all it cost me was $30 for a new dealer cap and rotor.
LESSON LEARNED: sometimes you have to get back to basics and don't over analyze.
AND NEVER BUY PARTS FROM AUTOZONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry if they are a sponsor of this forum, but their parts are CRAP!!!!!!
Anybody else agree??????????????????
PS - can't find my Autozone receipt for that original premium cap and rotor that lasted 1 year / 1,000 miles and caused allot of pain and suffering
I think the next 86,000 miles will be fine
And thanks again for the help forum members.
