Default low fuel light 1996 3.1

I've never had the fuel light come on. Like other people my gas gauge doesn't work. It used to when I filled my tank up till it got half empty then the gauge would jump around. But after I put my truck in the dit h in quit all together. I decided to check the fuel light to see if the bulb was blown. Come to find out , it didn't have a bulb in it. I placed one there just to see ifnitnwould come one. It didn't. Ran out of gas. Perhaps my truck didn't have this option after all. Can I get the parts to have a low fuel light?

I do that too. But last week I misses figured by 20 miles and ran out. First time I had ever ran it empty. Then found out I had a 22gL tank when I had always thought I had a 15. Now I know I get 16 mpg to figure by. As winter comes up I'll have more time to pull the bed off and fix the sending unit . Just thought it would be nice to have then low fuel light option

All Dakotas came with the low fuel light as well as the fuel gauge. It is a very common issue for the contacts on the sending unit to corrode. Or the sending unit was installed incorrectly and the float gets stuck. At the auto parts store's catalog there is no replacement except for the entire fuel sending unit with pump and all for $200. There is a great write up in the FAQ where one member found a fuel gauge float unit replacement part number.

I'm a little concerened now as to why the bulb wasn't there lol. My local auto parts store has my pump for $190 some odd dollars. Future project as winter comes. One more question, where can I find a valance with the factory fog light holes. I've o lay been able to find it without.

190 seems high I can get one for either my 93 or my 94 (they are different single line vs dual line fuel system) for $160 all day long at any parts store in town

Go for an OE spec Carter unit if you can; I have a cheapie SPI brand one, in my 93 now and I have had the low fuel lite come on with a FULL tank!!!! it has a mind of its own the original Caerter pump from 94 one in my other truck the lite is reliable though it too has a dead gauge; always always comes on with 5 gallons left (22 gal tank)
the one in my 93 used to be as reliable til i put this sending unit in...
and though pulling the bed sounds interesting I find it easier to unbolt the 2 straps and drop the tank rather tahn find help to lift the bed;
now on my last fullsize (97 ram 1500) with its 35 gallon tank being 3/4 full when its pump died I wasnt wrestling 27-some odd gallons sloshing sround and I did have help that time to lift the bed off in the form of a teenage son and a couple floor jacks.... with the Dakota I didn't have the help and the tank's smaller so it was easier to drop it instead

OK thanks for the advice. I've been debating on dropping the tank or pulling the bed. I'll wait till I'm close to empty before dropping it.
