Windshield wiper problem 1990
i have scanned all the article on here related to wipers and none are describing my issue. My wipers don't stop until they hit my drivers side mirror, then they go back as normal. If I reach out the window and stop them by hand they work like they are supposed to. They stop at the bottom of the windshield just fine, about an inch or so from the cowl. What controls this, the motor or is there a relay seperate?
how? have you had one apart to see what goes bad? On my 93 it does it sometimes; while other times it stops on the glass as it should. like there's play in the linkage somewhere and when the linkage turns to a certain spot it "tightens up" again to work as it should; very goofy
Mine is also intermittent, doesn't do it all the time. I have also heard that there is a limit switch in the motor that stops them and sends them back but I can't find a schematic of the wiper motor. Can't find one in a junk yard either.
oh a limit switch that makes sense theres alot of these trucks in the yards near me I am working a swingshift that I hate (currently on "graveyard" shift the WORST) if i can stay awake long enough one day next week I'll have to hit the yard pull one apart and see if I can see anything in the linkage that can cause something like this or else grab a motor

IDK if they still do but back in the 70s and early 80s wiper motors had park switches that would go bad and when they went bad wipers would stop where ever they happened to be when the switch would be turned off instead of returning to the bottom of the glass

yup. on swing shift right now all the way to work for 11 PM last nite I had to keep holding the windshield pillar with my fingers on the glass or it would go off the glass and bind yet if I had my hand there it would act like a stop and the wipers wouldnt want to push them outta the way. about halfway home this morning something shifted so the wipers stopped on teh glass by them selfs. I'm surprised they dont pop a fuse when they get caught on the pillar and bind in the few secs it takes to crank the window down and help the wiper back onto the glass...
OK I went junking yesterday and got the whole wiper train and have mine apart; just like the 70s cars they have nylon bushings on the ends of the metal links you can buy a pack of them from Useless Zone in the "help" aisle (the pack is an assortment of them that has GM Ford and Chrysler ones in it) they didnt have the pack with "just" the Chrysler ones in it though there is an item number for it in the catalog if you wanna special order them and wait a day or 2.... personally the Ford and GM ones are quite useless to me.
What I found was that the nylon bushing at the motor end was gone someone took a washer and bent a nail around the groove in the linkage giving me alot of slop in the linkage.... basically a "rig job" to hold the linkage to the bellcrank on the wiper motor. I thought they werent using that same design any more by then on my Dakota but once I saw it it was a big "OH YEAH NOW I REMEMBER" moment....
I have the whole wiper train here but I think Im gonna pop a correct bushing in mine and try that.... the hardest part about the whole deal is unscrewing the cowl (finned panel berween the hood and windshield) and taking the wiper arms off to get at the linkage. Worst case I have spare parts now in case I strip a wiper pivot this winter... very possible in the Chicago area...
