4x4 to 2x4, possible?...
..and how much of a P.I.T.A. would it be? My TC is shot, and it would seem cheaper to get a bigget driveshaft and lose the TC than to fix it... Any ideas/opinions?

For the $, why not get a new tc? If you want, I think you could swap in 2wd spindles and all the associated parts, and possibly the trans or tailshaft (not sure if its removable, auto or manual?) but why? Why not just put in a little $ and keep it running like it should?
I'm with Marcar here.
Why not just pick up a scrap yard transfer case and put it in. It won't run you up that badly in price if you were already considering getting a different drive shaft and essentially capping off your front diff.
This way you've got your 4x4 if you ever need it. Plus 4x4s are worth more then 4x2s so you'll hurt the trucks value if you downgrade it.

Cases around here tend to run at least $700 out of bone yards, as I've been pricing them for a bit, and honestly, that's too much to put into this POS. If i could only spend two or three hundred, that world be different. Its my only mode of trans, and the cheapest way to get it to roll under its own power will win, lol

Converting it will add up in ancillary costs. It may be more feasable to look for a Dak that is being parted out. Since your budget is extremely limited, I am not sure you will be able to accomplish what you are looking for.
Just rebuild your transfercase. Under $200 I think from Napa for a rebuild kit. The FAQ has the service manual which will walk you through it.
Or get a 2wd transmission and 2wd driveshaft and done, which will cost more than a transfer case.

whats wrong with the t case? you say shot but how? has it run dry and burned out the input bearing? has the chain slapped and rubbed a hole in the case? you may be looking at spending way way more that you really need to.

When i first got the truck, i was told 4x didn't work, so i never questioned it. Then i blew the ujoint at the rear diff. While dealing w that, i noticed there was a hole in the case, and it was cracked badly in a few places. also dead empty of fluids, and the output shaft had WAY too much play in it. I got the parts to replace the rear retainer ect (that was my bill money), & now I'm in a bit too far over my head.
