Default Transmission trouble with parts in pan

Hello ,
Hopefully somebody can help me.I recently bought a 1993 Dakota 5.2 with an automatic trans. The truck runs strong but, I recently had some trouble with the trans not shifting out of second until it was warmed up and now it will not go into overdrive.I was planning on replacing the trans filter because the original owner said it had not been changed since the truck was new and I hoped it would resolve the issues. I dropped the trans pan and found what looks to be half of some sort of ring. Can any one identify the piece that it broke off of.
Thanks in advance and I hope to become a productive member of this communtiy.

I believe it's part of a snap ring for something or other in the overdrive. Found a similar piece in the pan of my dads 42re. It still runs fine but I was told that it could grenade any time. Pretty sure your in for a rebuild or a replacement tranny.
