Default Door lock help

To make a long story short, in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy I was out do tree service, and while on the job my truck was in a hit and run. Crunched the door pretty badly. I got another one and have it on. I have the lock swapped from the old door onto the new one, but I cannot unlock it from the key. I can lock it, and I can get it to move the lock **** up, but not far enough to unlock the door. What do I do to fix this? Anyone have experience with this?
Also, for the future, is there any trick to getting the stupid door lock retainer clip back into the door handle while its still on the door with the glass in place? Boy was that a pita.

Thanks guys.

Does the key turn easy, or is it hard to turn the key?

A little hard, but not like I'm gonna break the key hard. It does unlock, but sometimes it takes a little persuasion and/or a few lock/unlock cycles to unlock.

Did you check the rod inside the door to make sure its not bent and hitting something? Thats the only thing I can think of that would make that happen?
