I'm assuming what you say by drive-shaft you mean front axle. If it is on top of the axle it is a Central Axle Disconnect for the axle. It has vacuum lines running to the transfer-case and then to the engine. The 4wd switch is there as well.

Default not sure if it is the c.a.d.

it seems to be a sensor... i remember disconnecting it but now that i have everything back together there is nothing left to connect to there. so if i was going to look for that sensor where would i start? and if it wasnt there were would i look next?

thats the plug for the 4wd light just below the t/c shifter. there should be a connector with 2 wires running out of it that is about 2ft long and plugs in some where by either the upper rad hose or near the back of the motor. i remember pulling that off of my truck when i tore it down. thought it was a little wierd to be run like that.
