My 89 42RH (A-500) shifts pretty hard through all the gears when doing so above 2K rpm's. Under that it shifts fairly smooth through them. Fluids look good as well. What should I be looking at to get this rectified ?

 

Probably try adjusting the TV cable. In your years it might be a linkage. Check the FAQ for a write up.
