Default I blew it, really need help with waterpump bolts.

Well this is a bit embarrassing. I just bought a 87' 3.9l v6 dakota and the water

pump was gushing. So I pulled it off and unfortunately the way I organized the

bolts and how much I decided to depend on my memory has failed me. The

manual seems to only have info and pics on the later first gen set up so I'm

pretty lost here. Basically I'm trying to figure out which size bolts go where, I

think I have most of them figured out, the 12 o'clock top center water pump

hole seems to short for the bolt I had placed for it. Also two small brackets

dropped off when I was unbolting things and I can't seem to figure out where

they go.

I remember feeling this bracket between the crank pulley before it fell into my

oil pan, the bolt holes match up with the bottom of the water pump but I can't

figure out what the rotted tube is for and if it's important.

This definitely went with the power steering bracket but I can't seem to figure

out how exactly it bolts up.

And lastly, no matter how I turn this little spacer circled in red I seem to have a

gap between the bracket and one of the bolts. This can't be normal?

Would really appreciate any help, kinda stuck at the moment trying to find

anything.

The spacer goes in between the bracket and the waterpump--put the water pump in, slide the spacer in, and then put the bolts in.

The tube on the bottom doesn't do anything--it might have had something to do with timing the engine, but I wouldn't worry about it. Looks like it can only go on one way, tho.

Start with the power steering pump and figure out how the bracket bolted to it--then try to figure out how that connects to something on the engine or on the front of the water pump--you can probably figure out which side of the bracket had the bolt head in contact with it--it will be clean and the rust pattern will be different.

I don't have your engine, so answers have to be kind of generic. On the long bolts that go into the block, I would wire brush them clean and use copper RTV to seal the bolts--use lots, let it seep out the end where the bolt head is and then clean it off with a paper towel.

Hope I helped a little, at least.

The long, thicker bolts go through the waterpump and the timing cover (the rear half of the water pump) and into the front of the block. The shorter bolts go through the waterpump and into the rear half (timing cover/back of the water pump) but don't bolt into the block.

Thanks I appreciate it. Yeah you are spot on with the spacer between the water pump and the air pump bracket, but like I said when the water pump is on and I have the spacer inbetween the bracket and the waterpump there is like a small gap that exists between the spacer and the bracket no matter how I place it in which is a bit confusing.

I did the water pump on my 96 3.9 and had the smae thoughts as to where to put the different size bolts. Heres how to do it. You can almost make the judegemnt as to where they go. Stick them in and if they b ottom out in the hole with just the non threaded part of the bolt sticking out then you know it goes in that hole./

Welp I figured it out, once I started putting crap back together everything kinda started making sense. In case anyone is ever in a similar situation (because I couldn't find anything for early first gen) the reason the spacer had the gap was because I had it aligned on the wrong hole with the bracket to the air pump. I needed to move it down to the left and the bottom right water pump bolt also bolted through the bracket. Once I did that the only thing really left was the small bracket from the power steering assembly. This one was really confusing and I kept trying different positions for like 15 minutes. Basically what threw me off was the little square hole through it. I thought it had something to do with the aligning bolt but nope it just sticks up in the air for whatever reason, maybe it has to do with A/C trucks. Thanks again for the help guys.

the square hole is to help you set the tension for the belt on the air pump there is also one one the power steering pump you can fit a 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar in the square hole using that to set and hold the tension for the belt while you tighten the other bolts that hold said pumps.
