Default 44RE or 46RE? Also a PCM swap question...

Hope you guys can help me out. I put a 97 Jeep 5.2/44RE into my 85 Grand Wagoneer. The PCM has VTSS (security) and I'm in need of a different one.

Did the 96 or 97 5.2 Dakota come with a 44RE or a 46RE?

Also, I can find a couple 96 Dakota PCMs in the Pick N Pull around here. Not a 97 though. 96 PCM is an 880, 97 is a 383AD.

Comparing the two PCM pinouts, they look to be mostly the same, but the 96 Dakota PCM looks like it doesn't have an oil pressure sender through the PCM, I'm guessing it was a manual switch straight to the gauge?

Also the Dakota SCI transmit and receive pins are reversed to that of the ZJ. Not sure if it matters, but the pins would be est to switch at the PCM or data link connector.

The IAC wiring might be a little different, too.

Any other issues using the 96 PCM on the 97 motor? Are the cam profiles different? If any of you know it might save me some time tracking all that down if I buy it.

Thanks for any info!

Hmmm...it looks like the 96 Dak uses the power for the ASD relay to power the alternator. Not sure I want to fiddle with the wiring again. That part's all done. Haha!

Although I have noticed the Dak PCM has a direct circuit to a MIL bulb. The 97+ stuff uses the gauge cluster to light it. Be nice to have a functioning MIL...

The 96 Dakota 5.2 V8 uses the 46re, 97-up the 5.2 uses a 44re which is slightly weaker. You can get the PCM flashed to disable the security system. The motor will be the same. Post up some pictures of your swap.

Thanks for the info. I'm assuming the PCM won;t know the difference if it's running a 46RE or 44RE right? I think it takes the same electronics...

However, you can't remove the VTSS the ZJ PCM has. It's different than SKIM and can't be disabled once it's been through the 20 start programming on the DRB. Hemifever can remove some, but not all SKIM when flashing it.

Here's some pics. I'm excited for it, gonna be the wifes driver. If I let her that is.

Out comes the AMC 360:

Transgo JR shift kit

Old 727 column shift bolts on with minor mods. They are the same basic case.

My collection. I have a 98 5.9 in the TJ already.

Adapted the AMC motor mounts to the 2wd mounting points on the 5.2

Needed an 11/16 spacer for the NP229 to mate to the 44RE. Was able to modify the factory vacuum shift to accomodate the spacer.

5.2 set in

Modded the factory pickup with a Ford in-tank pump. Using a WJ fuel filter as the regulator.

Everything fit up real nice. Motor mount points lined right up, so did the trans mount when I moved the Wagoneer crossmember back to the 6 cylinder position.

Exhaust lined right up with the ZJ y-pipe, and the same 2.5 inch size.

Very important.

Also lifted the Waggy 4 inches. Almost done!

I don't know Chrysler VATS, but have had some experience with the VATS on a 95 Chevy Lumina (OBD1, btw.) The VATS module on my Lumina gave up the ghost and rather than buying a $300 VATS module from the Evil Empire, I found a schematic for building a hack-box online. Found it here, I think: http://newrockies.com/buy-from-me/ He's a GM guy.

This from the Cherokee forum. "Thank you very much for the responses to my request. I have found the listing for the kit at AutoZone (Bullidog #791 for $24.99) and will install next weekend. " http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f5/98-g...sarming-74875/

Interesting. I wonder if the VATS system is similar enough to the Chrysler VTSS. Even if it can be bypassed though, I think it has to be done through the Grand Cherokee body module, since it's the body module that activates the PCM. I'll contact him though, thanks for the lead!

I also found this, but again you need the body module hooked up:
