Default 91 Dak 4x4 transmission question

I figured I'd stop in here before I start freaking out about getting a transmission rebuild, so what's up, I hope I can get some help that will save me some money.

Problem: Today i was trying to pass a vehicle on a 2 lane, and as I start to pass him I see my speedo jumping around, then when I pass him, the speedo pretty much died, and it wouldn't shift into overdrive. It happened after I got about half way around the guy.

I had 1st 2nd, 3rd was a bit sketchy, but it still works sorta, and 4th(OD) is pretty much non-existent. I think maybe a sensor went bad or something, as the transmission was running fine throughout the day. I checked the fluid, it's where it should be, and it's still pretty clean, I'm sure it could use another service though.

So is my hunch right, because I really hate to go to a transmission shop and hear them tell me I'll have to pay a ridiculous 3000$ for a rebuild.

Sure sounds like the speed sensor on the transfer-case which sends speed data to the PCM, which then the PCM controls the Over-Drive (4th gear) and TCC Torque Converter Clutch lockup (which is why 3rd sucks). The speedometer cable is attached to that sensor.

Thanks for the heads up, That seemed to be what the problem was. I took it to pepboys and they figured out something had disconnected, they fixed it no charge.
