Exclamation Help! Wiring a Rear View Mirror with map light.

Well I took down the headliner today to replace the material (it was sagging pretty bad). I had a rear view mirror that I bought with map lights under it at a junkyard a few months ago just for when I did this job. So I wired the mirror to the dome light in the back of the club cab and nothing worked. So I turned on the key to see if that would trigger any power, well the radio never came on or light up or anything. I then checked the fuse and the radio fuse had popped/blown. I know that I have all the wires hooked up color to color (pink to pink and yellow to yellow). Now there is a black ground wire on the mirror part that I hooked up to the roof of the cab. That is where it is supposed to go or should I not hook it up at all? Has anyone ever had this happen to them? I'm no electrician by any means and am looking to fix this immediately. Thanks in advance for replies!

Black is typically ground but not always. As for the other wires, they may have the same function as your stock harness and they may not. There will be an all time power and all time ground and a ground provided by the door switch.

if the map lights have switches then you'll have a power wire going to the switch and another wire for the dome lights and the ground. like crazy said the black wire is usually ground.

I did it! Finally got it to work. After an hour of checking and rechecking the fuses under the dash only to find that none were bad. I was just about ready to tear into the dash when I remembered that there could be more fuses under the hood and sure enough there are 2. And the little (5) fuse was blown, so I replaced it with a (10) to support the little extra load and now everything works again. No problems. I will just ground that black wire to the roof. Thanks for comments!
