Default 96 Dakota 4 cyl breaks up at high RPM?

Hi all, happy weekend (if you're not having truck problems). Here is my problem. I was driving home and was trying to get up to interstate speed. Normally I baby my 4 cylinder, bur had to get moving on the interstate. As I was winding it out a bit, it started missing real bad at high RPM's. I didn't push the issue, as I figured it would only make matters worse. Tried it 2-3 more times on the way home, same thing at high RPM's. Runs fine as long as I drive normal. Ran about 150 additional mile since. Something is wrong, I would like to fix it before it becomes a breakdown problem.

Do I just need plugs and wires? I think it's been about 2 years since I changed them. Thanks in advance!!

Check for codes? Check for vacuum leaks?

my dad a saying " check the easiest and cheapest thing first" plugs, wires, rotor, cap. hint on the cap if it has a vent, plug the vent with JB-weld. it will keep the moisture out.
