Default 46RE automatic basic question

Is a 46RE 2wd trannie interchangeable with a 46RE 4wd trannie--just unbolt the tail shaft and bolt on the transfer case?

Dumb question I guess, but I haven't found an answer.

Is this for a '96 Dakota? If so, let me know and I'll move your post.

Well, my understanding is that the trannie for my 96 is more similar to 2nd gen. Dakotas, so I guess I want it in this section. (When I bought electronic parts they were for 96 to 99.)

Which kinda brings up a dilemma. My 96 is a gen 1 truck, but is the only year in the generation that's obd2, it's kind of the the orphan stepchild of the Dakota family. Body and drive train are firmly Gen1, but engine and transmission that are Gen2.

To answer your original question, it's almost that easy. Yes, the tail shaft housing basically bolts on but there is a shim that you'll need to measure.

I'll move this thread to the Gen 1 forum. It may benefit someone else.
