Default 91 3.9 screeches trying to go into overdrive

Hi Guys-- Just purchased a 1991 Dakota 3.9 V6 with 155,000 miles and going over all the fluids and such. Changed the engine, and rear end oil then the transmission with Dex 3.
Took it out on the road and it shifts good thru third, then after going into OD the transmission starts a sharp wining noise until I hit the OD button and take it back out of OD.
What should I be looking for?

Do not use Dexron 3 in Chrysler Transmissions. ONLY use ATF+3/4 in Chrysler transmissions. Do not use fluid that says it is universal either, it must be ATF+3/4. Start with dumping your fluid out of there and putting in some new proper fluid.

i found an EXTERNAL trans filter. with this i hope going into the internal filter will not have to happen as much. i think most chrysler rear wheel drive trans. the fulid in line is on the left side at the rear. but double check. note: the fluid in gives lube and coolant to the bearings
man o man i about forgot yes its a cut & past sorry. __________________
after you clean the trans. add this to your*chrysler*trans. an external fluid filter
1. go to auto-zone. get 2210, its called a power steering filter, but it is for transs to. it is for 3/8 tubing. by (magna-fine) be sure to use high pressure hose. Reff:http://www.magnafilter.com
2. for other sizes wix 58964 5/16 tube size

I pulled the pan back off and let the oil drain last night.
Will put fresh at+4 back in today and see what happens.
The external filter is a good idea! The pan was loaded with metal the first time I pulled it, still had some the second time, If it works as it should, I will drop it one mor time and add the external line filter.

Was there a magnet in the pan to collect the shavings? If not you may want to put one in.

Yes, there was a magnet in the pan, I pulled it and cleaned it.
Well, I buttoned everything back up and added fluid. Took it for a spin and same thing, but this time I determined that it wasn't actually going into overdrive, but would whine or scream as it would try, almost like a solenoid was trying to engage and not going in far enough to make the connection into gear. It shifted well from 1st to 3rd and then back down, only OD seems to be the issue.
The new Haynes manual doesn't mention anything about OD.

once again, it feels ands shifts well from first to third, then acts like it wants to go into fourth (OD) makes a screeching sound and never goes in.
what should I check now?
