1993 Dakota no fuel, no spark, lots of clicking
older vehicles not so much.... I took a computer from a shadow and put it in a dodge Omni.. took one from a kcar and popped it in a dodge spirit..
new cars run on canbus and mostly data and is much programmed on a per vehicle bases they can be highspeed or low speed (Chrysler) .. were switches send a signal to a computer to another to another to another to trigger a relay to lower window..lol
I had a 2005 Liberty (body control module) the door got ripped off in a parking lot( guess it thought it could be a Wrangler) new door from a Limited model, I had a base sport model... used door harness from new door it wasn't the same, so I adjusted mirrors.. rear window rolled down, tried to roll down passenger window interior light turned on, opened door radio turned on... was hilarious
yea it was.... worst part is was a professional body shop that did the work(insurance) bill was almost 5 grand after paint(door was 2300 used.. only 3 left in Canada LOL at the time)
anyway if you buy from a wreckers they will prolly ask for vin to match up with proper computer(motor tranny ect..) or parts store for new, in my case of the 91 spirit turbo my mom had needed the vin.... otherwise wouldn't even give me one...
I didn't have to take any additional steps to program the computer.
I would say that it took no more than 10 minutes start to finish.
I wish dropping the fuel tank was that easy.
Re: cold solder joint
That is more than likely the case, If one has access to a hot air station, one could easily try a reflow on any bad joints... in a pinch off road or way out from town it is probably the only way to go.
For me, mostly because my rework station is on my bench at work, and AutoZone gives a lifetime warranty on computers. It ran me $150 to never have the problem again.

then OBD2 in 96 ... well lets not go that far LOL
anyway in 93(op posted 93 year) it had 3 different engines California emission design and so on.. roughly guestimated as cant see definite answer for the 4 banger roughly 18 computers were available in 1993 for the Dakota :O .. not including non magnum(TBI injection or OBD2 in 96)
5 for V8 Magnum (2 of which are California emissions)
8 for the V6 magnum ... couple are California
5 for 4 banger... California included (one site shows more but no OE #)

92 and newer all are magnum engines
92-95 as long as you get one from same engine/trans combo (even from full size van or pickup) youre fine
a 94 computer will fun that 92 just fine or vise versa just bolt in plug in and go
