will a 93 dakota 6cyl trans fit a 96 6cyl dakota?

I don't think so, not easily anyhow.
The problem isn't that it won't fit it's that they used different transmissions. The 93 is an 42RH (mechanical shifting) transmission. Your 96 is a 42RE, which is an electronic shifting transmission. Your 96 is a OBD2, the 93 was an OBD1. So if you try to put a non OBD2 trannie in, your computer will set a bunch of codes (about 6 of them, I think,) the check engine light will come on. Might work, but it's not the right one, and there are possibilities for some electronic problems (like the overdrive may not work right.) I'm certainly no expert, and this is all my opinion.
OTOH, a 96 thru 99 42RE is interchangeable thru those 4 model years.
