LA 3.9 Modifications?s
Hello everyone, as I have stated prior I have a 90 Dakota Convertible truck with 95k miles. Because of the low mileage and the age I need to have some exhaust work done. I know the prior owners replaced the original muffler and tailpipe with one from Magnaflow but needs the muffler rewelded. That being said, it got me to thinking about mods for the 3.9L V6.
So, here's some questions I'm going to throw out here. On the 3.9L V6, would shorty headers and say a Magnaflow catalytic converter make a difference compared to the stock logs on a 3.9L V6? I know Mopar Muscle did a test on some different manifolds and headers:

Just wondering if there is any headers out there that would help with the power and torque that is a reasonable price and also would like to keep the egr and smog stuff. I see there is 92+ plus up stuff. I don't expect the headers to work miracles but, if I could pick up 10hp and torque that would be good and maybe gain a 1 mpg if that. I know the cheap Summit headers I had an old 68 318 helped some but, they were long tubes.
Anyways, the next question is in regards to the camshaft. I know the camshaft in my truck is really low lift. It looks like part of the "Magnum" engine upgrade included a more aggressive camshaft for the 3.9L V6. My question is would a 3.9L V6 Magnum camshaft/lifter/pushrods work in a pre-magnum block without changing the valve springs? I know it seems crazy but, I'd rather work with with what I got and if I could find a wrecked low mileage Dakota to pull my parts from then it would be cheaper this way.
