I believe they are all the same minus the obd changes and minor odds and ends like exhaust and injectors.

if I were you either get a 92 or 93 318 because those 2yrs had the bigger exhaust

I second going with 92 or 93. they have the larger factory exhaust, couple that with a 96 up intake or aftermarket M1 and you should have a great start.

Any old 5.2 Magnum will be an improvement over an engine with 2.5 MILLION miles!

My 96 has 234,000 miles on it and actually (other than the irritating pinging) is a pretty nice running engine.

For me, the problem with higher compression would be that besides getting crappier mileage, you have to pay more for higher octane gas. Just because gas prices are down, doesn't mean it'll last forever.

If you want more power from a Chrysler built engine, get a 5.9. Expect that you'll need to change the PCM, or get a tuneable one, and the 5.9 has different fuel pressure needs so some changes in the fuel pump and pressure regulator will be needed. You'll still be able to use low octane pump gas, tho.

I don't mean any disrespect but I have to disagree with you on this comment. The only major differences in the 5.9 and the 5.2 is the external verse internal crank balancing, and the stroke, 3.58 (5.9) vs 3.31(5.2) other than that the two platforms are basically identical. If you referring to a Non R/T 5.9. They both use the same heads, and pistons, cam ext. Honestly speaking IMO the 5.2 is a better engine, as there are literally millions of them around, and rebuilding them is rather cheap as well. Depending on what his budget is, I think freshing up his current platform is the cheapest and best way to go. Especially since he's gotten such great use out of the engine to begin with. Again not trying to start trouble, just exchanging knowledge and Opinions which we all know everyone has.

I'm not trying to argue with you here, but are you saying that a 5.9 won't give him more power than a 5.2 (assuming both are stock, of course)? Because that's all Brian said. He didn't say it was the cheapest way, or even the most cost-effective. He just said it would give more power, which is correct to the best of my knowledge.

Also, why would a 5.9 cost more to rebuild, considering the parts required are *******ly identical?
