Default Front wheels jump

Hi there. So recently my transfer case started jumping out of gear and now when I make a tight turn the front tires start jumping and chirping. Any ideas on what could be wrong before I start shoveling out money. Thank you it's a 1995 dakota 3.9 4x4

Sounds like it's in 4WD all the time. I assume you have the lever in the 2WD position?

Building off of what Tom said if it jumps out of gear maybe it jumps into gear as well?

your axle might not be disengaging. I had the same problem with my dakota.

Sounds familiar. Mine is also a 95, but with the 5.2. My t-case works, but feels a little dicey on its detents.
