Heavy duty flasher question
In order to pull my trailer without my blinkers blinking super fast, I know that I need a Heavy duty flasher to support the load. However, my hazard lights blink at the normal speed. A new flasher is $20! (I'm cheap). What I was thinking was: Can I just switch the 2 flashers? I definitely will use the blinkers more than the hazards. Are they interchangeable? Thanks!
The normal (cheap) flasher unit is made up of little more than a bi-metalic strip that heats up under load (the normal flash or turn signal load) to break the contact and then cools quickly and makes contact - there are no other electronics/mechanics in this flasher to deal with a load such as added trailer lights would give & this is why it flashes very fast (it heats up really fast from the added load). This added load will cause your normal flasher unit to fail quickly as well, the heavy duty unit will have a completely different switching system (you can see all the components in the clear case units) as well as built-in arc protection for the switch contacts (the contacts on the cheap ones will fry real fast with the added load - they're OK as an emergency spare). By the time you change your normal flasher a few times by being "frugal", the heavy duty unit won't seem so expensive.

OTOH, I picked up a Tridon EL12 for about $12.99 at Auto Zone in town. Cheaper after shipping was figured in, plus by going through the Fuel Rewards Network website, I get credit for it against my gas bill (not much, $50 purchased yields 5 cents/gallon off ... but eh.)

Cheap, but heavy duty, can be had by actually shopping around some:
