Unless you get a written, signed guarantee, these things are going to be as-is, where-is. So if they have cracked blocks, warped or cracked heads, you're screwed.

I think I'd look for the newest, lowest mileage engine. And you'll need the appropriate transmission--your current trannie might bolt up, but whether it can take the added hp & torque is problematic.

I think you'd be better to try to put a 5.2 or 5.9 magnum in your truck, btw. Supposed to give better power than the old LA engines--at least that's what I've read. I'd probably put a beefier axle in, too.

do I need a specific 360 for the 4inch stroke replacement crank?
in the article they built the 408 they used a 72 van engine from the junkyard...
I don't plan on re using trans.
ok so say you find one in good condition is there anything thing else you want to consider? ie. options/year

or is condition everything and they can all be made to do whatever?

thanks Brian good looking out I understand these are as is cash deals

I think Summit sells performance kits &/or short/long blocks. Not saying you should buy from them, but you might take a look at what they offer for some ideas.

When I was a young guy, 40 or so years ago, it was the golden age of muscle cars--guys that wanted to build up their Novas, Valiants, & Comets would go to the wrecking yards and look for pre-used blocks--heat cycling would make them better candidates for building than new bare blocks. Then they'd do lots of stuff like new cranks, rods, pistons, fancy performance heads, shop peening, balancing rotating assembly, dual quad or 6 pack carbs, and on and on. Gas sometimes was 19 cents a gallon. I drove a 63, lightened (rusted out, sketchy floor boards) dual carb'd Corvair--which could almost keep up with the small blocks. My dad, who bought me the car, never knew how friggin' fast the little wreck was. I never quite knew how my 17 year old cohorts could afford all the expensive go-faster stuff.

The point, is that you're gonna have to kind of write the book on your own engine--gonna depend on how much you can/want-to pay for horsepower. If you have lots of money, I'd sure as heck consider a supercharger. Supercharging is a lot more than just bolting on parts, tho, you need to purpose build the engine for it. I had a turbocharged Kawasaki GPz 750, it's a whole different world!

My suspicion, and why I suggested a Magnum, is that there may not be as much go faster stuff available, but you can do a lot of performance stuff electronically, which is relatively inexpensive. For what you are considering, retrofitting your truck for EFI, OBD1 or OBD2 is just one more operation you'll need to do--but the benefits make it worth it.
