Default 1991 dodge dakota stalling

i just bought a 1991 2wd dodge dakota 3.9l automatic transmission and everytime i try to put it in gear it stalls. i cant even get it to move 5 feet. when i bought the truck i was told the tranny was slipping and that it might need to be adjusted eventually so i didnt think it needed done right now. it ran fine (minus the tranny slipping a little) for a day then i cant get it to go. we checked the fluid and what was left of it was black. the guy we bought it from said he had this problem before and that it was some kind of vacuum modulator on the tranny (dont know the actual name) can anyone tell me if its the thing hes talking about or if its anything else and worst case scenerion if i blew the tranny. any help is appreciated. thanks.

Dodges don't have vacuum modulators. sounds like the torque converter stator may be seized causing it to die.
