Default Tranny question

I am wondering how to tell what tranny is in my 96 dodge Dakota 3.9 magnum 4x4 auto with o/d. Is there an easy way to tell? Also would anyone be able to tell me what gears would have came In my Dakota?

I believe that all 1996 V6 Dakotas came with the 42RE
The Dakota V8s had the 46RE. (as did the Ram 3.9 4x4)

I got all the build info, on my 90, from the body tag that was under the carpet on the passenger side at the rear of the cab floor.
Fairly easy to get at and it has all the info on your truck.

Here's how to decode it:

A dealer would also be able to give you that info from the VIN.

If there is a chance the transmission has been swapped at some time, and you want to have some "fun"... the transmission ID is stamped on the driver side of the transmission casing above the oil pan, near the lever.

Shouldn't you ask the TRANNY? He/she/it will know what it is.

There is a link in the FAQ to get a factory build sheet, just fill in the info requested and they email it the next day right from Dodge.

That's not as funny as you think I got me a shock looking for a replacement for my tranny yesterday! I think the term I used was 'rebuilt 85 ram tranny. I was just wantin to know what it would cost.

Even worse. I have a few friends who are in their 70's.
Years ago, one wanted to be able to email her kids and grand kids while on holidays.
She had heard about hotmail, and, me being the young friend with computer skills, asked me about it.
I told it would be prefect for her to use from the resort. "All you have to do is go to hotmail.com and set up a free account"

Well... change the spelling a bit... and she was a bit shocked... and called me on the phone.. mad.

After that I was more specific in the spelling.

I would have never thought they would do that.

Most Mfgs seem to want to charge for most everything, even if they are willing to supply the info.

Good Job Chrysler !

RAM TRANNY?
HOLY F!
I can imagine.
What's wrong with not being gay and just using the word TRANSMISSION?

I've searched several times using tranny in the term without bad luck. I'm guessing that the search engine had a hiccup as it was only the one link all the rest were automobile related.
