Default Transmission fluid Flush or Change?

Hello all,
I am currently in the process of changing all my fluids, but have been told flushing may ruin the trans. First off, my truck is a 1993 Dakota 4x4 with 21,000 miles. I know it has low miles, but the trans fluid is old. I have been told to flush it, and have been told to just change the fluid/filter.

My trans currently has the 45mph shudder when it switches to overdrive. It has gotten much better over the 1100 miles I have put on her since I purchased her 2 months ago. I am wondering if a FLUSH will have any affect on the current shudder…

Any info/opinions are appreciated. Thank you

With that low mileage, you probably will be ok to flush. It is not recommended on high mileage transmissions as the flushing can dislodge sludge/particle build-up and cause issues.

i found this external trans filter. the old auto zone 2210 magenfine filter is no longer available at auto zone. BUT i did find the same thing as JX-160 brand-- ATP. at a real parts house uses 3/8" tube. ONLY use high pressure hose. SAE J1019 217 psi working. NOT fuel hose for a carb engine.

I have talked with a couple old timers at a local shop and have come to the decision to just change the fluid. A lot of people said I might be okay to flush, but I really don't want to take the chance in messing it up. I have another question about a supercharger kit I found on craigslist, but i will post a new thread about it. Thanks for the replies.

Well, I changed my engine oil and filter today and wanted to know a few things before I tackle the transmission/ transfer case/ and diffs.

Transmission questions:
I read somewhere that a few people had problems with their transmissions after changing the fluid, claiming that they needed to "prime" the new filter by soaking it in new fluid before the install. Is this true?
The Haynes manual says I should do the "band adjustment" while the pan is off. Do I need to do this with only 21,000 on the tranny?
Also, should I go to the dealer to get a new trans filter, or are oriely/pepboys/autozone replacements okay?
