Default Steering Column?

It's been a while since I have last posted here but, I have a question. I have a 90 Dakota 2wd with power steering and I am in the process of bolting up the rack pinion coupler to the steering column shaft. When I took the old leaky rack out the shaft from the steering column seemed to slide out fine.

Now, that I am putting it back in the rack and pinion coupler is being a pain to slip back over the column shaft. Is there any tips to sliding this thing back in. I know there is a key way and only goes on one way but, for some odd those two parts are giving me fits getting back together. Anyone with any helpful tips? Thank you in advance.
