Greetings! And a transmission question...
Howdy! New to the forum! And so it begins.... Just bought a 1996 Dakota SLT, Extended cab, 2wd, 5.2 automatic and I'm really rather keen on it. I've been sorting out the previous repair attempts and other signs of neglect. I'll save the laundry list for later. My question is transmission related..
When I went to look at the truck, the owner said the transmission had been replaced with a 77K mile unit, the flex plate, the torque converter have also been changed out. They look brand new. The drive shaft has also been replaced. I didn't experience it during the test drive, and truth be told, I don't experience it 99% of the time simply because how I drive is that the transmission won't come out of second until (Almost exactly) 38 miles an hour (Per the speedometer).
I don't experience it as most streets around here are 40 mph. So as soon as I reach the magic number it shifts normally, Once it goes into third, I can ease off the gas and it'll fall into fourth normally. I can let the speed drop down into the 30's and it'll behave just fine. But for whatever reason if I don't get it up and out of second it'll want to stay there. If I don't get it out of second and let off the gas, it'll actually engine brake and the exhaust will burble (Which I guess sounds cool? I'd rather 3rd gear though). If I hammer it it'll kick down and behave normally. It's really only an issue on slow side streets, parking lots, traffic. I've tried taking the gear select when it was hanging in second and shift it manually into 3rd and it didn't respond. I gave it some gas and pushed it to 40 and it shifted properly.
Transmission's aren't my strong suit. I've done clutches in standards and dropped them before, I've changed out filters and gaskets, adjusted linkages and whatnot, so I figured I'd better ask before I start monkeying in there. I've checked the forum and when everyone else said 'stuck in second gear' they mean like, permanently. Which isn't my problem. Also Identifix doesn't seem to have any hits. So, Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Here is a possibility http://www.justanswer.com/dodge/1otj...-throttle.html Or this one http://www.bionicdodge.com/Download/...Adjustment.pdf If that does not help I'm guessing at this one maybe the Overdrive solenoid. I had shifting problems in my 94 V6 Magnum and got mine rebuilt and then got more improvement than the rebuild when I changed the Crank Position Sensor. :/ Welcome and Good Luck
