stereo replacement
I purchased a new stereo for my sons 1996 Dakota. When we installed it we cannot get proper sound. The front speakers only have a tiny sound and the back speakers do not make any sound. We have verified that the wires are connected properly. This truck has the upgraded sound system. Any ideas? I have been told that upgraded sound system had an amplifier that needs to be powered. Anyone have any info?? Ray
I'm not sure where the amplifier is in the '96, but my '97 had it in the right side kick panel. Rather than power it, I chose to remove it and bypass it. There is a plug-and-play harness available for doing this (maybe from Crutchfield?), but I just found a wiring diagram and connected the relevant wires.
It's really not that great of an amp, so if your new stereo has any power at all, you're better off bypassing it, IMO.

Yah.
The 1996 Infinity amp is basically the exact same circuits as the Infinity head unit uses, so each channel is right at the same power out. According to the articles on Allpar, that is ( see http://www.allpar.com/stereo/Infinity-Amplifiers/ and Jeremy's other articles there on the Infinity stereos.)
So I'd bypass, drive the tweeters and subs together, and have fun with it that way. Also, that's a good place to put your amp for your subs if you replace the speakers in the doors.
If, however, you don't have ANY sound - that's not the problem, since the head unit drove one of the two speakers, the amp the other (IIRC, the amp drove the woofers, but that's from memory and too lazy to read Jeremy's notes on Allpar for this answer *grins* )
