Default fuel pump run with key on or engine cranking/running?

Hi guys quick question, on a 92 dakota with 2.5L should the fuel pump run with key on or does it have to be cranking/running for the pump to run? Thanks in advance

It will run for a few seconds only on key on; after that, it won't run unless it's cranking and/or running.

This is covered in the factory service manual, BTW - I'd HIGHLY recommend picking one up.

Hmmm.... ok I agree. Mine does not run with key on. I verified pump works with battery power. i checked splice under pdc box and its ok. I swapped auto shut off relay with ac clutch and nothing either. I got more work.... Thanks!!

Also keep in mind there is no engine in the truck yet....... That may be affecting something.

*snrk*

I'd bypass the ASD to see if the pump runs at all.

Also, again, to troubleshoot past that I'd look for the factory service manual (Ebay has them used almost all the time) and check the wiring that way.

Seems like having no engine in the truck would affect this somehow.

In addition to no engine do you have no transmission? The neutral safety runs through the transmission connector. Don't know for sure if that's interlocked to the fuel pump but it is a part of cranking.

Transmission is still in place. Maybe once i get the engine back in and all electrical hooked back up it will work.

I just downloaded the 95 factory service manual off the site and think I found my answer. Straight from the manual:

The PCM monitors the distributor pick-up signal to

determine engine speed and compute injector synchronization.

If the PCM does not receive a distributor

signal when ignition switch is in the RUN

position, it will de-energize (remove ground). Battery

voltage will not be supplied to the fuel pump,

SO since I have no engine in the truck there is also no distributor in the truck . The pcm isn't seeing that signal so its not giving the asd relay its ground. To verify I will plug the distributor in and try it. I should have fuel spraying at that point. I will update back once confirmed.

Even with the distributor hooked up, you won't get but a couple of seconds at best; unless you're generating ALL the clock signals (cam, crank, etc.)
