Corroded off into the cooling system.

Also, I'll bet the radiator and the heater cores are pretty much shot and plugged.

However, I've seen that before.

A top of the line antifreeze (BIG hint: IF it's "Two gallons of concentrate for $4.59!!!" it's NOT TotL stuff ... ) and using distilled water will help reduce or eliminate this.

Heater core was just replaced but I'm thinking radiator may get replaced, the mounting blocks on the bottom are both sheared off and i believe it's just a matter of time before it starts leaking there.

So after driving it a couple of weeks I've noticed the gauge still rides up just not as bad. But, now if i drive in town it gets REAL HOT, probably 80% of the gauge and won't cool back down until it sits for a while. I'm thinking there's some obstruction in the radiator not letting enough water flow. The only parts that haven't been replaced are fan clutch and radiator. I've replaced all the hoses, thermostat, heater core, and water pump.

Default 2013 Dodge Journey se

I have a 2013 and I am having some similar issues but I think the overheating problem finally stopped but now my car won't go over 59mph and it is idling oddly.
I have replaced the fuel pump, hoses, thermometer, radiator, filters, new oil, new coolant, new throttle body, new sensor.. both throttle position sensors.
Or at least that's what I have brought all these things and my boyfriend is the one doing the work. But it's to the point where he is at loss about what to do and I'm about ready to burn it up. I have been without a vehicle off/on now (mostly off) for 6 months. I don't know a darn thing about cars and I am about ready to go get a different car.
It just sucks cause it is paid for and I was hoping it would last at least a few more year's before I would have start making payments on another one.
I am beginning to feel trapped in my house with no reliable vehicle to jump into. Ugh!
Good luck with your car.
