Not sure if this is the case with yours but my 96 3.9 auto did the same exact thing....Would just die out of the blue and usually start right back up, it would also kick and jerk occasionally while driving down the road..(seemed to be A LOT worse after a huge downpour) like something was getting wet...About 3 days ago it finally crapped out on me completely and the truck wouldn't start at all......It was my Crank Position Sensor......53 bucks at autozone and pretty simple to change....Goes right into the passenger side of the trans bell housing right behind the head......This fix has also solved the problem with my cruise control sporadically not working....

I read through this post, but I did not see where you were checking fuel pressure under a load.
I think dodge would be the same as chevy on this, but with a chevy, if the pressure is 45 at idle, under a load it will go up a little 48-50 psi. It should never go down.

It's fixed. I've been driving no problem for two weeks now, runs like a champ. I really thing the whole issue was that the 60 pin connector had a few of the pins that opened up over time and were not making a good connection. After fixing that no problem. But on route to discovering that simple problem I changed a whole lot of other things including the CPS.

The boxy Dakotas had issues with water intrusion into the bulkhead connector. I've seen them rotted down to just a skeleton. This one looks pretty good.

This could be why my stereo only works about half of the time and other misc. weird electrical issues......Thank you......I'm going to check out my connector this weekend....Moisture intrusion makes sense too because the problems get much worse in the rain....;0)

In looking at the female connectors I could see that some of them, about 5, were widened out and pushed back a bit. Using the article posted here: http://www.merkurboys.com/wiki/index...xtraPinInstall I pulled the connector apart and took out each affected pin and with needle nose pliers just squeezed it appropriately to get them back to round and tight.

She's been running like a champ all week so hopefully I nipped that one in the bud.

I guess lesson learned is always suspect the most simple fix first. Of course I followed the diagnostics in the official Chrysler manuel for this truck and as such ended up replacing many of the other parts one by one first. It probably didn't need a new computer in the first place but I'd like to think that she runs better now with the new one

The old one was pretty beat up looking too and the center mounting connector bolt did look cracked a bit. Probably nothing wrong with it but oh well. Now she's got a nice fresh new tune up and should be good to go.

Next I'll need to fix the speedometer. That will be another thread.

Regards.
I wanna say thanks for this info & link and say I'm quoting it so readers know the solution you found as it sort of goes off topic after you posted this.
