Default Transmission upgrade to a 3550?

I was looking through the FAQ section and found this link. http://www.drivetrain.com/parts_cata...yslerDodgeCARS

If you scroll down to the dakota section, it seems they are saying you can use a 3550 with a AX15 bell housing.
Wondering if anyone has tried or considered this?
My understanding is the 3550 is basically the same as a NV3500 but has a separate bell housing vs all one piece (NV3500)

I have heard on a few sites that the nv3550 is weaker than the nv3550 and is a problematic tranny. Midwest transmission sells a rebuilt ax15 to jeep guys to replace the nv3550 because of the nv3550 having issues. I talked to a guy on the phone there and that is the information I got.

You may be right. I thought the 3500 and 3550 were basically the same transmission. Other then being 1 piece vs 2 piece.

Makes sense but from what I've been told it's not a very good tranny

Interesting. Seems it would be well worth further investigating, including the potential problems with the NV3550.

93RT, did you see dakota 1996's post regarding installing/removing the NV3500 from under a gen1 (96) Dakota? He's done it, says it clears everything OK. He doesn't have a body lift either.

Yes I seen his post, but even though I cant imagine any difference in the 96 vs 87-90, it seems that some surprises pop up!!

FWIW I am going to have to be pulling my transmission in the near future and put a clutch in mine. I would have liked to have gone back with the NV3500 and tie it too my 87 3.9 motor for now. I think I can use a V6 clutch assy, from a 96 or so. Its the same dia. (10.4) but has the 10 spline disc. What I would really like to have done was put an 11in. clutch in, but I feel sure its a different bolt pattern vs the 10.4 and I dont think the flywheel is drilled for both patterns. Again, Im just guessing at all of this.
Any input you could share, I would appreciate it.
