Swapping 94 3.9 to 98 5.2 from a GC to Dak
Hey all,
New guy to the Dodge Forums here, and I have a few questions before I start the swap.
I bought a 94 Dakota 4x4 extended cab with the 3.9L that supposedly only had a few wiring issues under the dash.
Well, I fixed those up, got the truck running, only to find it billowing white smoke out the tail pipe, and dumping anything you put in the radiator.
So, I managed to score a 318 from a 98 Grand Cherokee, with the PCM (just in case) with around 120k on it, for $150. It was running fine, but the trans took a dump just after it was rear-ended.
So, I want to do the swap, and from everything I've read, most of it should be straight forward, but the only issues is that the motor is an OBD-2 motor, and the truck is OBD-1.
I've ordered the V8 flexplate from Amazon so I can re-use the AX15 from my Dakota (which has a fairly new clutch).
Ok, so here are my questions:
1) I've read a few posts about changing oil pans. Will I need to worry about this with the Grand Cherokee oil pan, or should I be OK? (obviously can't tell 100% until I try the swap, but would prefer to go in with all the parts before I tear it down.)
2) I've also read that I may need to swap exhaust manifolds from a 93 318 onto the truck for the EGR stuff, but only one thread I've seen in 2 days of 8 hours+ each day of research has mentioned that. Is that correct? If so, I guess I've got some more part hunting to do. (would manifolds from any other year/vehicle work for EGR stuff?)
3) Since I got the motor with the PCM, would I be able to use the 98 GC pcm in place of the dakota's 3.9L PCM? Or will I only have to worry about wiring in the 2 additional injectors from the 318?
4) Sensors! I know I'll likely have to replace all the sensors on the 318 from the 3.9L, but with no knowledge of the history of the motor, I'm leaning towards just buying all new sensors. Will I be able to just hop on a parts store site and start adding up all the sensors from a comparable 94 dak with a 318 and will they fit the GC 318?
Thanks all!

I have been watching this post hoping some others with more knowledge would step in. I suggest you look at this post. https://dodgeforum.com/forum/1st-gen...le-dakota.html
Ragged 89 has some experience with the wiring etc.
Also, I suggest that you visit a site called forabodiesonly. Go to the magnum swap section. There is a member there magnummopar (Evan) and he has a business making swap parts such as wiring harness, etc. Also he does a lot of magnum swaps into jeeps. He seems very helpful and probably could answer some of your questions.
My opinions I will offer are based on what I have read.
1. Are you sure you can use your old clutch (10.4) with the V8 flywheel? I thought the flywheel was drilled for 11in and 12in clutch only.
2. I think the oil pan will be ok. The full size truck pan is deeper then the dakota. I would suspect the jeep and dakota use the shorter pan.
3. I believe the exhaust manifolds are going to have to come from a dodge. Jeep put the starter on the passenger side, vs dodge on the drivers side.
Good luck with the swap, and let us know how it goes!!

Thanks for the update 93 ragtop!
I'm going to enjoy reading over that link you sent, the first page has me hooked already.
I'm pretty sure I can use the old clutch based on what I've read, I just have to be careful to not abuse the crap out of it, but that's why I have a built wrangler. This truck is going to be the daily for me, along with take crap to the dump, and haul the family to easy camp spots with the camp trailer.
For the oil pan, I'm happy to know I'm not the only one that thinks CJD would have used the smaller pan for the jeeps, but only time will tell. We just got hit with a big snow storm, and are supposed to have snow for the next 5 days straight.
I'm pretty sure this project will be on hold until Feb now, due to the weather.
That sucks for the starter.. I wonder how that's going to work.. guess we'll see. I'm not afraid of wiring at least, so that's a good thing. It almost sounds like pulling nearly the entire front end off is going to make my life 10x easier when doing the swap.. I just didn't intend on doing a 'restoration' of the truck.. I kind of like the beater look it has going for it.
