So I finished my 318 swap about 2 months ago. I was driving home from dropping off my daughter at school this morning. I shifted into 3rd pressed the skinny pedal, and heard a very loud pop. Maybe a backfire? Not really sure as I have never driven a car that backfired. I pressed the gas again to test it, and I heard it again. It died and now It turns over, and will not start.
My buddy is going to help me get it home this afternoon when he gets home from work.
So my question is where should I start my troubleshooting?

Thank you for the response. I think it is very unlikely to be the chain. I replaced it with a double roller, and installed a new tensioner 2 months ago before I dropped the motor in.

 

There was a check engine light. Here are my codes 12, 45, 37, 32, 27, 51, 55. I have a mopar performance pcm and a 5 speed trans... should I ignore 37 and 45? 32 is egr system failure. I have been curious about doing an egr delete. Is the delete a good idea, or should I repair it? Looks like I need to check fuel pressure at the rail? I can hear the fuel pump buzz when it is in the "on" position. I am going to rent a fuel pressure tester right now, and Ill post the results.

 

I checked fuel pressure at the rail. It pressures up and then the psi starts dropping. I wasn't sure if this was normal in the "on" position so I tested my other car. It holds the pressure steady in the on position. When I tried cranking it over the pressure went to about 36 psi. It wont run right now so it was in the "on" position and started losing pressure again.
I'm not sure what the next test should be.
Anyone?

I am not a mechanic. The fuel pump should not lose pressure. The code 27 seems important to me. That could be the distributor pickup coil failing. Or it might be the fuel pump failure to supply enough pressure to the injectors causing it to indicate circuit failure. I have no idea how to test the pickup coil.

 

It seems that enough fuel is being pumped to the rail, but not getting to the engine. Is there anything I can do other than throw parts at it?
I have a set of injectors from a 96 ram. Ill try new o rings on them and replacing the ones i have...

 

I get the frustration and I wish I could be of more help in testing it. It could be the injectors and you might do some reseacrh on what exactly is meant by "Injector circuit failure" as that could also mean the connectors on each injector I just assumed it was the pickup coil.
This is the pickup coil. Not sure what year you have but at least you'll have an idea what it is. I think I got mine at NAPA for <$20.

I appreciate any help. thank you onemore94dak. I am assuming that since fuel pressure drops it is a leak in the fuel system. I have the new o rings, and I am prepping the Injectors to go in. I will install them tomorrow, and update If this is the fix. Not sure what to do next so I will try replacing the pressure regulator.
If anyone knows what or where to test please let me know.

 

I agree that might help with the fuel pressure but I suspect the 27 code indicates an electrical problem.
