Default Peened housing retainer?

So I'm in the process of refurbishing my lower control arms for a 1994 4x4 dakota. Right now I'm trying to get the ball joint out but I'm stuck. In the factory service manual all it mentions is a "peened housing retainer" but it's more like a solid brass cover with a snap ring around it. I got the snap ring off without a problem and my instinct tells me to use the fix it stick method and pound it off but I'm not sure. could I press the joint out with that cover still on? Any suggestions would be much appreciated thanx

Been a few years since I did mine, but I believe you just remove the snap ring, then I pressed mine out.
Remember the metal has been pressed together for over 20 years, so it may take some effort to push it out. Good luck.

BTW the upper ball joints are screw in, and they can be real fun getting them out!!!

Issac95sltv8magnum says his is a 4x4; those are riveted in from the factory, and bolted in if ever replaced.

So he's got that part easier than you and me *grins*

Ralph, sorry, I have to disagree.

4wd top screws in, and bottoms press in and then a snap ring is installed on the end. Here is a ad from ebay showing a picture of the joints.

You're right from the pictures, 93 Ragtop ... I was working off of memory, which was wrong.

Must be 2nd gen that picks that up.

*waves hands* Well, the big thing is, for the threaded one, my Dakota needed a 1,050 ft/lb impact wrench and two mechanics to get it out ...
