Something just dawned on me. I believe I know the difference between the two with mounting and length. On the auto there's an over drive unit attached, but the transmission mount is under the transmission itself. The nv3500 mounts as the auto does, but doesn't have the added length of the od unit. So the transfer case bolts to where the od unit would, and thus the reason needs lengthened and the front needs shorted roughly the length of the od unit.

Ya?

The measurement I was giving is for the front driveshaft. There are 3 u-joints in the front.

Measuring from the splined end u-joint, to the middle? u-joint, it is 22.5 in. The total overall length from center of u-joint cap to the last u-joint cap is 25.5 in.

Here is a picture from ebay for reference. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Drive-Shaft-...FZNJl0&vxp=mtr

My intentions with this post was to help to decide if the transfer case is in the same position on a manual transmission vs a automatic.

If there are any other measurements or pictures I can take that will help let me know.

Thanks. I'll measure mine and see what's what. I think I have it nailed down now.

Are you aware of any other parts from a 97+ that will work in a first gen? (shifter and pedals specifically)

Im sorry, I dont know. But I will say to stay away from the NV3500 that used the electric shift transfer case. It does not have the bosses on the side to mount the np231d shifter (transfer case)
Also, even though the bell housing is the same where the engine attaches, it is different at the bottom where the supports that go from the engine mounts to the bell housing are attached. (on the 4.7 version)
