Yeah, boat launches would be impossible without a good parking break.

So are there any bolt in solutions from other applications that have an LSD?

I'm leaning towards LSD over locker, since I might use this truck in winter (after painting the frame and underside!!!).

I guess some jeeps came with them, but it from what I've read there's no way to tell without opening up the diff?

first gen Dakota's came with trak locks. As did second gen. 87-02 or so is a bolt in. Lsd is EASY to find... Dont know how your searching or who's telling you you have to open the diff...

Spin a tire, if they spin the same way, its lsd.

Did you even bother to read the link I gave? Why switch in a whole rear end only to still end up having drums?

Agreed...even my lowly 90 Vert came with SureGrip (Chrysler's designation for LSD). They are plentiful.

I don't care about the drums and I need a parking brake for launching my boat. Hacking the rear discs to work with the e-brake sounds annoying and time consuming. I'd rather save time and just find a bolt in solution, the brakes on my truck are fine.

Where do you find them? I've typed chrysler 8.25 in CL and get basically nothing.

Do you just hit up salvage yards? Not sure I know of any around here. :|

I've also done a little hunting for LSDs and lockers. Lockers are fairly plentiful and relatively cheap but they're also LOCKers and aren't too preferable in the snow as you alluded to. Even though LSDs were common in these trucks I think it's rare that they're sold apart from axles, so that's why they're hard to find. So apart from digging at a junkyard, eBay might be your best choice. Something like this should do what you need...I think:

edit: cheaper here:

I dunno, I don't find anything on Craigslist.

However, RockAuto does list new TracLoc (Chrysler's OTHER LSD differential) for a 1988.

You'll need to know the spline count; should be 27 spline, but count and make sure!

Also, Summit, Jegs, and others can sell new SureGrip and TracLoc differentials. (Note: TracLoc is a copyright of the patent owner; yah, Ford's are also TracLoc, because both are made under the same patents. They don't interchange, however.)

its not hacking. Its a very slight modification. And sure, your brakes might be fine, but that by itself isnt a reason not to swap in an axle that's an upgrade all the way around. Especially when you say you wanna take your truck out west in the mountains iirc. Drums are going to fade a lot more and quicker vs disc brakes. Then theres the huge difference between your 9" drum brakes and 11" disc brakes.

But float your own boat, not my truck. I just dont see why someone would swap an axle thats goinf to cost almost the same money and not get at many upgrades at the same time as possible..
