This.
Or both; pick up one from the boneyard, and then use it to set the length on a nice chrome one to the proper depth into the oil pan.

Curious, what makes the depths different for various years of the same engine? I have a similar problem. The Crate Mopar 360 Magnum I bought had a center sump oil pan on it which of course wouldn't clear the x-member. So I went with a Durango 2000 Pan which fit perfectly. The Durango Pan is much shallower, so the oil pickup/level is different. Unfortunately, I have a v-belt setup, and the stock Durango tube/stick kicks it out to the left past the serpentine position of the Durango Alternator. I need one that goes straight up inside the V-belt Alternator position (the mopar crate tube is like this). Right now I have the short 3.9 stick stuck in there just to plug the hole, but I need to get a stick and/or tube. What would be the best route to get the correct length without dropping the oil pan?
Change your oil and filter. Pour in the required amount of oil, run the engine enough to build oil pressure, let it sit for a couple minutes, (engine off) check your oil. See where it's at on the stick, and take it from there. The important thing is, that there is the proper amount of oil in the engine, not how accurate the stick is.
OK I think I posted this for someone else. Maybe someone can sticky this information somewhere? I took my dipstick out and measured it.
94 Dak 3.9- Oil dipstick from base of T handle to tip is 32 inches. The add line is 1.5 inches from the tip and the safe line is at 2.5 inches from the tip.
I am assuming no one has replaced my dipstick before I purchased the truck.
