Default Mirrors. I Hate Them!!!

Afternoon all,

So I get the new mirror today for my 93 Dakota, get in installed and go for a test drive, have not had a passenger side mirror for 2+ years so wanted to make sure that it was adjusted and tight. It works great.

Got to a stop light and noticed that the rear view mirror was off went to adjust it and it came off in my hand. In thew last 3 years I have reglued, replaced and reglued again at least 8 times, I kid you not my soon to be ex-wife pulled it off 4 times in just over a month.

I am open to suggestions on how to get the thing to stay. I have used the stuff suggested by an auto glass place, basically the kits from O'Riellys or AutoZone, I have even resorted to superglue gel. I clean with fingernail polish remover and soak the button, I scrape with a razor blade while damp, then I clean with vinegar a couple of times, then class cleaner and finally warm water. After gluing the button on I let it sit for 2-3 days to cure before putting the mirror on.

Is there something I am forgetting or am I just cursed? I have in 35 years of driving only ever had one other mirror come off and it stayed the first time and when I sold the car 5 years latter is what still attached.

Thank you,

I usually just toss it in the glove box, and forget about it.

That said, *usually* the kit you get at the parts store works just fine.... I don't quite get why yours are being so uncooperative......

Ask your local glass shops.

The ones locally (the local ones, anyway!) will glue it on for free.

And so far I've not had one of those fall off. Oh, they've replaced them, and for the paid price of about $240 tax included, they toss in a whole new windshield!

Pretty sure my OEM mount was plastic and the same thing happened. My new windshield to replaced my very cracked one came with a nice metal mount. Mirror won't budge now. I mean that was like $140 installed but if it's your original windshield it might be pretty pitted and scratched by now and worth replacing anyway. Worth considering.

Heh. Every time I've replaced a windshield, it's had a massive crack.

I've got to get mine replaced again (be the fourth one in the Dakota in the past seven years!) by March next year to pass inspection.

I'm planning to pick up an autodim compass mirror to replace my standard one; I like both, and when the GPS keeps going "Turn North on Yadda Yadda" and it's noon and I have NO idea which way is north in some small town I've never been in before ...

Did that $140 price get you the right glass? The reputable glass guys quote me $275 here in Oregoon. The "I know a guy" guy said he'd do it for $165. I suspect the second guy is using lower quality glass. He used to work for Safelite and uses their supply guy.
I've been putting it off since I bought this truck.

On Topic, Yes go to a good glass shop to get that mirror installed.

Woops I was wrong on price it was $170 installed at JN Phillips auto glass, just checked my receipt. Yeah it's the right glass and I've had no problem with it. Unfortunately to my knowledge basically any after market glass won't resist scratches and chips nearly as well as the OEM but I had no choice but to replace it. In any case the glass has been fine for the past year+ and I can say for certain that the mirror mount is superior quality to the OEM.
