Most common cause (apparently) is the plenum pan gasket failing with age. I'd start there.
Second, which isn't a Dodge exclusive, is the valve seals going bad.
Before I tackled that, I'd also put a Mopar PCV valve in (aftermarkets are oil guzzlers; the factory one doesn't suck as much.)

where in Chicagoland? I'm about an hour south. (and 2 counties away) I was downtown last night and I HATE HATE HATE being down there, I prefer the cornfields. $49 to park for only 4 dam hours!!! that's $12.50/hr, people like my wife don't even MAKE that much.... and then get taxes taken out which reduces it more..... We went to Chicago Theater to see Steve Winwood.... the show was great but I didn't think I had to buy a ticket for my Wrangler, too.....each ticket for the show were within a couple of bucks of being the same cost as parking... and taking the train is a joke.... have had issues with that before....thinking of getting tix for Todd Rundgren at same place but traffic and parking are threatening that thought.
no back to regularly scheduled post...
I have seen Magnum engines eat a quart of oil in 600 miles and replacing the plenum gasket eliminated the oil usage.
and other engines use more than a quart to 1000 mi caused by valve seals... if you have a good compression tester (you wont be doing a compression test, just need the whip hose along with an air compressor to keep from dropping the valve) and a compressor you can do this WITHOUT TAKING THE HEADS OFF in a couple of hours..... valve seals about $20/set, valve cover gaskets about $25. oh you also need a valve spring compressor designed for taking the springs off with heads in place, should be able to rent or borrow this tool.
intake reseal isn't expensive, and plenum/ intake gaskets can be done on a Saturday afternoon. with the gaskets, oil change, antifreeze, bypass hose and T stat you should be able to do the whole job for less than $75.
DEFINITELY replace that bypass hose, its like $7 and hidden/buried so it is a forgotten about part, but you gotta take it off to get the intake off anyways, goes from front of intake to top of water pump, hidden by AC mount bracket and common source of leaks/breakdowns on Dodge 3.9s and small blocks longer than the Magnum series has been around.
and the T stat is somewhat buried, again change it while the getting to it is good.
and don't buy the "cheap" parts. like with the thermostat the difference is likely $1 to $1.50 for a cheap one vs a good one like a Stant "Superstat".... as much of a pain as they are to get to, and the amount of labor being exactly the same, with the "best" grade youre more likely to only have to do the job once.... I have been thru 3 T stats on my '92, I hate redo's.... the ones I have put in so far, seep and seem "stuck open" right out of the box. engine don't get up to temp.
on the gaskets go with Fel Pro or Victor (Mahle) and take your time.... its not that tough to do, biggest headache is brittle 25 year old wiring harnesses.
one more thing.... replace both temp senders, the one with 1 wire AND the one with 2 wires, they like to break when you unhook them (old, brittle, too many hot and cold cycles) this should cost $20 for BOTH combined. and screw in and out about as easy as a spark plug once the alt and AC pump are out of the way.
but if you have to take your truck in and HAVE this work done? expect to pay a shop $600 to $800. MUCH cheaper to DIY or find a buddy that will trade work or work for beer..... everything I listed above with all gaskets, fluids, filter, T stat, oil filter, and temp sensors should be able to be bought for <$150 total. BIG difference between that, and 6 to 8 hundred..... I can do a lot to my truck for that kind of cash/ and pay $0 labor.....
